The Ankerkvartalet district is located in the heart of Stavanger city center, between Breiavatnet in the south, Vågen in the north, the cathedral in the east and the brutalist icon Stavanger swimming pool in the west.
The new Anker Quarter, in the heart of Stavanger city centre, is an urban renewal initiative that primarily involves converting existing car-based outdoor space into car-free public space, so that the quarter is more closely connected to the adjacent urban structure. The intention is materialised by lowering the entire Ankertorget square one full floor down. The lowered Ankertorget square opens up a porous and finely meshed ground floor, with new intuitive shortcuts and opportunities for more active first floors. Existing buildings in the quarter are added with one floor, and the quarter is “completed” with a new volume. Taken together, the existing and new volume will clearly define Ankertorget square internally in the quarter, while strengthening the urban spaces and the encounter with the surrounding urban structure. The new quarter will be an “urban quarter”, without backsides or back streets, with public spaces that are available to residents and visitors, in addition to the tenants.
